Tingkat Catering - Empire Catering!

Being a second time mum, I sort of knew what to expect during maternity leave. So this time, I am not going to be so garang to think of making my own lunch with just myself looking after the newborn.

I booked myself tingkat lunch from Empire Catering.

Fortunately, I did. My 2nd born is a little more difficult to look after as he has very bad reflux. Every feed is a nightmare. Every feed I kill a lot of trees because of the tissues used to clean up his vomit. The endless washing of his and my clothings. Because he regurgitates his milk so much, I had to give him milk in smaller amount and every 2 hourly. But he is a growing baby so smaller and 2 hourly feeds may not be sufficient for him. Plus he regurgitates so much, being on breast milk, makes him hungrier (and angrier) easily. I hardly have downtime. Even having lunch, I have to gobble my food (3 dishes and 1 soup) in under 5 mins. I swear I have never eaten so fast in my life!

Basically, there is no time to cook. Even expressing milk is a challenge at times and I cannot express in peace. Most times after feeding, cleaning him, putting him for his nap, washing his clothes, washing and sterilizing his bottles, its time to get ready and warm up his milk for the next feed. The entire cycle continues the entire day. On bad days, he poos after his feed so there is additional diapering duties and if he decides to go on a mega poo, there will be additional clothings to change.

I am not lamenting on my responsibilities as a mum. I'm saying all these because unfortunately, I have much to complain about the caterer and the sales person - Catherine!

I am busy and super lack of sleep but I just had to blog about this while expressing milk!

As I am breastfeeding, I have requested for some food items such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower & etc to be omitted from my order since these food can cause either wind in baby or reduce breast milk supply. On the web order form, I remembered I specifically ticked on the box not to have prawns. Before my confinement lady left, she has reminded me not to take seafood for the time being. Moreover, I had a slightly difficult delivery this round and since the wound is still healing even though I have completed my confinement, I decided to be good and abstain from seafood especially prawn for now.

Initially, the sales person - Catherine was all nice and friendly on the phone. She called to explain that if the food items I requested to be omitted are accompanying items in a main dish, then they will not be able to change the dish away. For eg, there might be shrimps fried together with vegetables, etc. Sure, that I understand and I accept.

And so my tingkat journey started on 18 Jan 2016. First day of delivery, the food wasn't too bad though oily. The feedback I had for the first delivery was the menu was not according to the menu posted on the website. And one of the dishes with beancurd only had 3 pieces of miserable beancurd which I thought was pathetic. The beancurd came with cabbage / white vegetable as seen in the picture below. I am alright with it as the sales person had already mentioned that if its accompanying dish, they cannot change it. I emailed her to ask why the menu is different and that the beancurd portion is kinda pathetic.

Later on, I realized on my own, the menu on their website is not updated. So I did not pursue this with the sales person. She also did not reply to my email on the above. I also did not have the time to follow up.

A few days later, I received this dish in my tingkat order.

I got a little upset because that would mean I have one dish less to eat for lunch.

Then the next day, this was in my tingkat!

Drunken prawns! I was quite mad by now. Two days in a row I was given dishes I had requested to be omitted. Two days in a row, I am one dish short for my lunch. Even if I am willing to close an eye and eat the prawns, I am allergic to drunken prawns. I cannot take drunken prawns. Tried and tested twice and both time, I had allergic reactions to it. This time, I emailed the sales person with the pictures and I am quite pissed by now that she has not been replying my feedback. Immediately after she saw my email, she called me.

She said she tried calling me after my first email feedback but couldn't get me. I told her I am really busy with my newborn, I have no time to pick up calls then. She asked why I didn't call her back in a not very nice tone. Seriously, I have no idea who's number is that. I don't even have enough sleep, do you think I have the time to call back? If its urgent, call me again or drop me a message. And since I emailed you, at least have the basic courtesy to reply my email if you cannot reach me on my phone, no? This is what age? Internet age, auntie! If you can accept order via internet, email me an invoice and accept my payment via internet banking, you cannot reply my email?

Then she insisted, I did not request not to have prawns. I am very sure I did indicate on my web form order. She still insisted I did not. Fine. So I asked how about the cabbage? Her reply was 'Mam, I don't work in the kitchen!' WTH!! I raised my voice a little because I think this is very bad attitude and reply from her. She is the sales person, she took my order, she has the duty to ensure the kitchen packs the right food to me. What do you mean by you don't work in the kitchen so that is not your problem? That is NOT my problem either, madam! I paid for it, I liaise with you, you jolly well ensure I get my order right.

What I cannot stand the sales person is her attitude and her lack of response. Yes she may need time to check with the kitchen on why the order was not done properly, but at least REPLY to my email and let me know that she is checking! Is it that difficult? As a sales person, she does not even have any basic customer service.

Then I remembered and reminded her of the conversation we had about shrimps as accompanying dish when I first placed my order. I am not sure if she recalled that conversation, she cut me off by saying she will compensate with a dish and hung up on me!

Seriously? What service is this?

I emailed her immediately to tell her that she is very rude and that after my 20 days of tingkat ends, I want to cancel it. And as usual, she doesn't acknowledge my email about the cancellation.

Oh guess what compensation dish did I get the next day?

This definitely doesn't justify for the cabbage and prawn dish I received for 2 days.

Just 11 days into my tingkat, I have 4 complains or 5 or 6 of them. Or rather on Catherine!

Yesterday, I was heading out so I emailed her last week that I do not want any lunch delivery on 3 Feb. She did not reply. I had to send her a few emails to ask her acknowledge and I even called her. When I called on Monday, she defended that she hasn't checked her email. I told her my email was sent last week! On the same day, she replied with a 'Noted'. But still, the food was delivered yesterday!

I am sick of washing their tingkat because the food is so so oily that I always have to washed it twice to get rid of the grease. I have enough of washing clothings so I definitely don't appreciate this and decided to top up for disposable containers. Its supposed to be $10 additional a month. I'm slightly halfway through my 20 days of tingkat lunch already so I expect a pro-rated amount but no, the sales person says its $10. Sure... fine. If you are so hard up for that additional $5, I gladly give to you. I take it as doing charity since you are so in need of it.

After I am done with transferring the $10 via internet banking, I emailed her the details. Again, she has no decency to reply that she has received the payment.

I am on several mummies' and our new condo whatsapp chat group. Some of them were asking for recommendations for tingkat caterer. I have shared with them about Empire catering. I think its too stressful to order from them and with a non-responsive sales person, you are like ordering from a robot. No human touch at all.

This is my first experience of ordering tingkat and yet it has to be such an unpleasant one. Catherine, thank you so much!

Hopefully when I decide on my next tingkat caterer, food and service is better.

Vintage High Tea @ House, Dempsey

It was our customary wedding anniversary and we both had taken leave. Hub suggested going for a nice lunch or high tea. I would prefer high tea as we normally do not have the time or chance to go for one. We looked around a few high tea places and I was hoping to try Antidote out. Unfortunately, I thought it was a little expensive. With my condition now, I cannot eat too much. It gives me bad bad heartburn. Hence I think its not worth the money to visit Antidote. Maybe next time.

We shortlisted Lime at Parkroyal and Goodwood Park. In the end, last minute, I remembered there is high tea at Dempsey and did a google. How lucky we are! House has a vintage high tea and we though the price is ok at $30++/pax, Moreover, it was a Thursday! Their high tea is available on Thurs and Friday. Luck is on our side!

House has a relatively huge sitting area. We were ushered to our seats and I am very grateful to the lady who showed us to our seats. Seeing my pregnant tummy, she took a cushion from another couch for my seat so that I can sit comfortably. I was really impressed with the lady for being observant and being caring to her customers. Thank you for that! :)

Choices of tea available.... I love tea! Every since I got pregnant, I hardly drink tea. If I did, its mostly non-caffeine like cammomile which I don't really enjoy. But since I had been good and abstained from black, red and green tea all these while, I figured, it wouldn't harm if I had tea today. :P I chose the peppermint tea.

The pastries buffet looked really good too. It was so prettily laid out that when the buffet line started, many people were snapping pictures away. So did I. :P

The selection was yummy and I really enjoyed. If there is a chance, I hope to come back again for high tea.

Besides tea, they served limited lemonade drink with Basil. It was yummy and when they had it refilled, people were Q-ing for it.

This was a special lamb dish they served to each table. I don't take lamb so I skipped this and hub did try a little only cos by then he was too full to take in anymore. Ha!

Chir Chir Chicken

We had our first encounter with Chir Chir Chicken Factory when we were in Korea last year. We just wanted to eat fried chicken and came across this place at Myeongdong. We weren't sure then if it was good but since it was there, we just hopped in.

Shortly, Chir Chir Chicken Factory started opening an outlet in Singapore at 313. I couldn't remember if its the same fried chicken we had until I looked back at my Korea trip photos. :P It was the exact same restaurant we had.

I had visited Chir Chir Chiekn Factory several times with my colleagues. I wanted to go with my hub and so we did when we were on leave.

We had mango salad and the berries soda water just like what we had in Korea.

They also have another outlet in Bedok Point which I have visited as well. To be frank, I think the quality and service at Bedok Point is so much better than the one at 313. Even the mango salad pales in comparison to the one in Bedok Point. Of cos if you compare with what we had in Korea, it is even worse. Portion is small, expensive and not as tasty.

Thank god the fried chicken maintained its quality from Korea to Singapore!

I love its fried chicken wings. I will go back just for that surely.

Check out Groupon as they have deals for Chir Chir Chicken Factory from time to time. With the groupon deal, its quite worth it!

Doubt or Not?

One incident yesterday morning made me realize we should not jump to conclusion when dealing with a child.

My boy called me from mum's place to tell me that his feet is painful and he doesn't want to go to school. He doesn't detest school so its definitely not because he wants to skip school hence he said that. In fact, over the weekend, he did complain about his painful toe. He went for swimming and cut his toe against the wall tiles in the pool. The cut isn't deep but enough to make him feel the pain.

So instead of doubting that he is lying just so he can don't attend school, I asked if it was because of the incident in the pool and I gave him a solution which still allowed him to go to school. He was convinced and listened to what I said with no disagreement or reluctance.

This episode made me realize we should learn to listen to the kid first and then indirectly teach them a solution to get around the problem he had.

So what did I tell him?

I merely asked him to get a plaster from grandma to put on his toe and then wear his crocs to school instead of his school shoes. That way he don't have to wear socks which will cause discomfort to the cut he has on his toe.

And so he went to school in his crocs and didn't have any further complains when I got home for the day.

When I checked on him in the evening, he said it was still painful and I asked him to put on some aloe vera gel which he did.

Hungry Heroes

When I found out there is this cafe - Hungry Heroes, I told myself we must visit one day! My going to be 5 year old boy is so into super heroes these days.

The cafe is located just opposite the Civil Service Club (CSC) House at Farrer. The stretch where the cafe is located is quite quiet. Hence when we arrived, we thought the cafe is not crowded. By the way, there is parking along the road and if parking is full, you can always park at CSC.

We visited on a PH and did not make any prior reservation. On the outside, it looks quiet but when we entered, there were already diners in the cafe. The ambience on level 1 looks cosy and very super heros. There were posters and figurines decked all over the walls.

We were told to wait as its packed. Shortly, the guy found us one last table for 3 on level 2. Boy.... we were lucky!

The table mats in newspaper format with super heroes related news.

I love this ceiling hung lightings. Its decked with full of super heroes figurines. Not sure if it's customised, DIYed or it came that way. If its DIYed, I would say its very creative!

This was on level 2 and surprisingly, many families bring their babies and toddlers here. I guess super heros are not for the young but also for the super young aka toddlers and babies! If they make the place even more kids friendly, I think it would be perfect.

Food wise, initially I thought the prices was a little steep. But looking at the portion, I think its ok. I had the boneless chicken thigh and its really good. Hub had dory fish and chips. We are both small eaters and we thought the portions were a little over whelming for us.

We ordered some sides for our boy and the portion is huge too.

There were life size super heroes decked all over the cafe much to the delight of our boy.

So much so he asked why we took so long to bring him to such a place? Gosh... this coming from a 4 year old 11 months boy!?

After our meal, we went to level one to take a look at the wall decor.

This was on level 1's ceiling. Quite innovative and nice.

Overall food is not bad and service was quite good execpt that it took a while for food to be served. The ambience is nice too. Worth checking out!

A break from MBW

It's been a long hiatus from MerryBerriesWorld.

I am pleased to announce we will be having a new addition to the family come this December! *Yahooooooooo

Definitely excited but the journey had been tiring and uncomfortable. Our cafe hoppings and many family activities had to take a back seat. Even if we did any, I was just not in the mood to document them down.

I can foresee the blog may come to a stand still for a while when we welcome our little one. I will try to blog once in a while whenever I can. :P

Cafe Hunting

Note: Bump Entry (Please scroll down for updated entries.)

Sorry for the lack of updates on this list. Been busy and the rate cafes are sprouting makes it hard to catch up unless I do this full time. :P

In recent years, Singaporeans love to hop and hunt for cafes. Many new cafes have sprouted within the island and even in heartlands.

Here's a list of the cafes compiled and will be updated along the way:

Brunches Cafe

It's been quite a while we went to a cafe proper.

Hub told me there is a new cafe in Rangoon and it looks quite interesting. So we thought why not check it out.

It was the long weekend, I thought the cafe might be crowded. When we reached surprisingly, it wasn't. We got ourselves a table.

I kinda like the ambience. Very cosy and very retro-ish. The young service crew are very polite and observant to your needs. Very few cafe has services like that. What more, young service crew normally don't really care. Some can even be rude! So I am really impressed with the services here.

Slowly and surely, the crowd streamed in. Surprisingly, the crowd are not youngsters. Some looked like families and some are diners who looked like in their 40s.

Food wise, we had their all day breakfast. I would say prices is a bit on the steep side and nothing to rave about the food. In fact, hub complained the bacon he had had some awful smelly oil taste. Perhaps its not fresh or the oil had been reused several times.

But they served us sample sizes complimentary bread and I must say they taste good!

Overall, the experience is not bad. I would be back just for their service maybe for a drink and some snacks.

Oh and the items in their cafe, there are price tags to them so you can buy them if you fancy any!

Restored!

I am so so glad my blog got restored.

I have been busy hence it has been a while I last blogged. Decided to peep into my blog yesterday and realized 'Hey Its Gone?!'.

Did a check and realized google has taken it off because there were spams. Not sure where the spams came from. Definitely not me cos I am too busy to even log on than to spam people!

So I submitted a request to have it restored and thank goodness today its accessible.

Christmas Wonderland @ Gardens by the Bay

As much as we love the flower dome, we also love the various activities / theme available at Gardens by the Bay throughout the year.

Still in the Christmas season, Gardens by the Bay is holding a Christmas Wonderland theme. What is Christmas without pretty lightings?

This set up is really pretty and that is where the scheduled man-made snow is held.

Lighted fairies on stilts!

People were gathering around waiting for the man-made snow.

Finally it came and kids went all crazy!

There is no snow in Singapore. There is no Christmas market here too. But we have lotsa activities to bring the mood of Christmas out. Many families and friends in SG do not celebrate Christmas as a religion but its a chance to gather, eat, be merry and bond with your loved ones.

Such carousel feel and I really love it!
