Fire Station Visit @ Bishan

I love exposing my child to all sorts of activities. I think learning should not only come from books. Hands on or physically going through the experience would be more valuable. Best thing is our SCDF has made visits to the fire stations possible at no cost! Every Saturday from 9am to 11am, the fire stations are open for visits.

No pre-registration is required. Just walk in! There will be staff on standby bringing you through and sharing with you on what they do on their daily job scope. Each session is about 45 mins long.

Kids get to hop onto a real fire engine to have a taste of how it feels to be on the red vehicle. My child was certainly delighted.

The equipment found within the fire engine.

The water hose... we were told the water in the fire engine can only last the fire fighters 5 mins when putting out a fire. Wow! They will need to rely on nearby fire hydrants for more water supply. To put out a raging fire, a lot of water is required. Hence, one should not play with fire! It's such a waste of water and manpower resources to put out fire and worse, lives may be taken away!

One of the personnel showing us how the hose is operated. You can have a go at the hose if you wish to.

The water pressure from the hose is actually quite huge and can go quite high.

An ambulance is also available within the fire station so that they can co-ordinate with the fire engines in cases of emergencies.

The personnel showing us how they slide themselves down from upper floors should there be emergency cases where they have to move off quickly for an operation.

This tour, no doubt is free, is very insightful and interesting. It allows the public to better understand their job and how tough it is. It also gives a better perspective to kids of what a fire fighter does. There should be more of such open houses from various profession so that the public can benefit from it.
