Jack's Place @ Bras Basah Complex

Went past Jack's Place at Bras Basah Complex twice. The first we contemplated to have our lunch there but we didn't. The second time we passed by, all 6 of us agreed to try their lunch set.

Everyday they have different set lunch menu from $12.90 onwards.

That Friday we went, they served grill chicken in sesame sauce as well as fish and chips for their mains. Most of us chose the grilled chicken. The set came with bread, soup, main course, dessert and coffee / tea.

The soup was nothing to rave about. The chieken with sesame sauce was also nothing spectacular. The chicken had lotsa fatty skin which made the chicken not very nice to chew. I chose to switch my fries to baked potato by topping up $2 for it.

Caramel chocolate eclair was served with our set lunch.

Service was not very prompt too. I had to ask the waitress to serve us the sour cream for our baked potatoes. Shouldn't this be asked when they serve us our dishes since a few of us opted for baked potatoes?

A few times we asked for service, the same tall waitress gave us straight unpleasant expression. What is the world coming to? Sigh

For this price of set lunch, we can get better stuff elsewhere with better service.

Don't think I will return anytime soon.

Overall, it wasnt that fantastic that will make me crave for it. During bill payment, instead of settling ours first, they attended to patrons who are settling their bills at the counter when we had passed them our payment first. Instead of having waitresses walking around, there should be an attendant at the counter and another helping to bring the bills to the guests at their table isnt it?

In the past, when they were more traditional, we used to dine very often at their Orchard outlet. The one at the basement of a building next to The Heeren. That was one of my dad's favourite place to bring us for dinners. Their service was so much more prompt and on their toes! Jack's Place has evolved over the years and their services as well as food quality have deteriorated along with their evolving unfortunately.

Ma Maison @ Bugis

Met a friend for lunch at Bugis today.

Saw Ma Maison's set lunches so decided to head in for a try.

They have several set lunches to choose and all the set lunches are around $11 to $17. It comes with a soup, salad, bread, main course and a drink, which was quite worth imo.

I'm not really a fan of corn soup but this is nice! It's lightweight and very smooth.

The bread is really good. Even after leaving it on the table for a while, its still crunchy and soft on the white. You can choose either rice or bread.

We both had the same beef steak. We were not asked how well we want it done but it was cooked to the perfect texture. Not tough not too bloody. It also came with spaghetti as a side which I thought was too heavy. It was also accompanied by mash potato. Will be good if it came in a bigger portion for the mash potato. :P And the spaghetti can do without and replace it with a small dessert. :P

Good to have a tea to wash out the heavy meal.

Setting within the little restaurant is cosy and homely. Although it is weekday lunch, the restaurant is busy. About 80% of the tables are filled. When we were seated and about to make our order, the service folks are really busy but service is still ok.

To make your payment, check out with the metal heavy key that is on your table.

At the payment counter, the lady who sounded like a Japanese was really polite and friendly. The entire lunch for 2 set cost us only $30. It's really value for money.

Overall, it would have been perfect if it came with dessert. And they have 50% off for selected dessert if you ordered the set lunch which we only got to know when settling the bill.

I'll definitely be back one day. The only bad thing is the ventilation isnt that good. I came out smelling like a fried food the entire day. Haha.
